ASC/AC Book Fair: A Celebration of Cinematic Excellence and Community
On November 12th, the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood buzzed with excitement as ASC members, associates, staff, local crew, and guests gathered for the annual ASC/American Cinematographer Book Fair. This year's event was a testament to the power of storytelling and the collaborative spirit within the film industry.
The fair was generously sponsored by Nanlux, Cinelease, and Band Pro, with a special announcement from Nanlux regarding their Lending Library program. This initiative, founded by Amanda Fritz, has been a beacon of support for aspiring filmmakers from USC, UCLA, AFI, and Chapman, offering free access to Nanlux's extensive equipment catalog for the past two years. Now, the program is open to all, welcoming professionals and newcomers alike to explore its unique offerings.
The highlight of the day was an engaging conversation with the renowned husband-and-wife creative team, Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, and James Ellis Deakins. This discussion marked the release of Roger's insightful book, 'Reflections on Cinematography,' which offered a captivating journey through his unconventional path to becoming a two-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer. The conversation, moderated by ASC 1st Vice President Eric Steelberg, delved into Roger's unique approach to cinematography, including his groundbreaking work on the Coen brothers' 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'
Roger's journey from a young art student to a cinematic master was a testament to his unwavering dedication and creativity. James, his partner in both life and creativity, shared how Roger's problem-solving skills were instrumental in navigating the complex digital workflow for 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'.
Eric Steelberg, a fellow cinematographer, shared his personal connection to Roger's work, emphasizing the shared challenges and triumphs in the field. He expressed the humility of sharing similar experiences with someone so revered in the industry.
The Book Fair transformed into a hub of creativity and connection as attendees eagerly lined up to meet Team Deakins and have their copies of 'Reflections on Cinematography' signed. However, the event's signings extended beyond that, with ASC members Hiro Narito and Roy Wagner signing their own books, 'Depth of Field: Life and Work of a Cinematographer' and 'A Cinematographer's Life Beyond the Shadows'.
Roy Wagner, a veteran cinematographer, shared his unique perspective, emphasizing the importance of answering the question, 'How do you survive Hollywood?' He attributed his 55-year career to his unwavering commitment to his craft, inspiring others to find their own paths.
The fair also showcased essential technical resources, including the American Cinematographer Manual and The Cine Lens Manual, co-authored by ASC associate and AC technical editor Jay Holben and ASC member Christopher Probst. Team Deakins emphasized that while technical knowledge is crucial, it's the storytelling that truly matters.
Keith Jefferies, a camera operator for Local 600, highlighted the importance of storytelling, stating, 'We don't do this just to light pretty images; it's about relating stories to other people.'
Team Deakins' openness and transparency in their filmmaking process and industry experiences have garnered praise, as exemplified by their podcast and website. John Simmons, ASC 2nd Vice President, praised Roger's generosity with information, reflecting the spirit of community and collaboration that the ASC strives to foster.
Roger and James Deakins, embodying the ASC's values, emphasized the importance of giving back and sharing knowledge. Roger shared his early experiences, recalling the willingness of members to share their expertise, and how this event is an extension of that spirit.
The ASC Store offers books by Society members and subscriptions to American Cinematographer, inviting all to explore the world of cinematic excellence and community.
