CFL's Clock Conundrum:
The CFL rules committee has proposed an intriguing adjustment to the game clock. While the league is transitioning to a 35-second running play clock for 2026, the committee suggests keeping the clock untouched for the last three minutes of each half. This means that the final minutes of the second and fourth quarters will retain the current 20-second play clock, ensuring officials have time to set the stage for those crucial moments.
Overtime Overhaul:
And here's where it gets controversial. The committee wants to eliminate ties in overtime. Currently, if a game remains tied after two rounds of overtime, it ends in a draw. But the new proposal suggests a thrilling solution: if the game persists in being tied, teams will alternate plays from the opposition's three-yard line until one team scores and the other doesn't. This could add an intense, sudden-death element to the game, but will it be fair?
Recent Tie Games:
Since 2016, the CFL has witnessed four regular-season games end in a tie, with two of those occurring as recently as 2024. This might suggest a growing need for a tie-breaker mechanism.
Additional Rule Changes:
The CFL is also implementing other rule changes. In 2026, missed field goals that go wide or sail through the back of the end zone without a return will no longer result in a single point. Moreover, team benches will be positioned on opposite sides of the field. And in 2027, the field will shrink to 100 yards with 15-yard end zones, and the uprights will be relocated.
These recommendations are now in the hands of the league's board of governors, who will decide their fate. CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston is set to address the media on Wednesday, providing further insights into these potential changes.
