An organization is issuing a Christmas caution to households about potential uninvited guests in their homes. Experts from the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) encourage everyone to inspect their properties for signs of pests as the festive season approaches.
Visible indicators such as old nests, droppings, and gnaw marks can signal that pests have taken up residence in your loft and may have left behind unexpected surprises. If you notice any signs of activity, the BPCA recommends contacting a pest professional promptly to remove the pests before they spread further.
John Horsley, BPCA’s training and professional development officer, explains: “When you head up to the loft to retrieve your Christmas decorations, it’s a perfect chance to check for any signs that pests have moved in.” He also suggests inspecting Christmas treats for packaging damage that could indicate rodent interference before the holiday season.
Other warning signs include droppings, urine odors, and damage to boxes containing decorations, which can point to rats, mice, or even squirrels in the attic. Since rodents must gnaw to survive, visible droppings or gnaw marks should prompt an inspection of wood, pipes, and cables for potential damage.
Finding old bird nests may reveal an access point somewhere in the loft. If possible, seal the opening and remove the nest. If you encounter a live bird or a fresh nest, seek professional guidance, as all wild birds, their nests, and eggs in Britain are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Overwintering insects usually don’t cause immediate problems, but you might encounter wasps, cluster flies, or insects tucked away in boxes or behind insulation.
Certain moth species can invade homes and may end up in old attic clothing. The BPCA recommends looking for damage to carpets or fabrics, holes in clothing, and signs of moth eggs or larvae.
Mr. Horsley adds: “Discovering a pest presence, or even a full infestation, can be stressful and may pose health risks to you and your guests. It’s important to obtain help from a pest professional, preferably a BPCA member.”
