Bold headline: A promising return from vertigo may be unfolding for Mets rookie Nolan McLean as he gears up for Team USA. And this is the part most people miss: his health comes first, even as the World Baseball Classic call draws nearer.
Mets pitcher Nolan McLean says he’s feeling significantly better after vertigo-like symptoms lingered for several days last week, as he prepares to join the United States for the World Baseball Classic. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said, “I’m definitely feeling better these last couple of days. I haven’t missed any throwing days. I pushed through a bit last week, still had vertigo symptoms, but this week I’m feeling really good.”
McLean described the onset of symptoms early in the week, noting that a prior high school vertigo episode had passed quickly, whereas this recent bout lingered a bit longer. He explained, “Just standing still, I would get dizzy out of nowhere. We basically concluded it was inner-ear related.”
Before joining Team USA, McLean plans to throw on Wednesday to confirm he’s fully ready. The 24-year-old remains a rookie and is lining up for his first full major league season after finishing last year with a late-season call-up record of 5-1 and a 2.06 ERA across eight starts. Now he’s preparing to represent his country on the big stage as well.
“I obviously had to take care of my body first and make sure it’s where I want it to be before I go out to compete for Team USA,” McLean said. “I’m comfortable with where I’m at right now.”
