Samantha DiMarco, affectionately known to the baseball world as Sam the Popcorn Girl, recently shared some bittersweet news: she won't be serving up those delicious kernels for the majority of the upcoming season. This announcement, made on a Thursday that also saw significant Phillies offseason news, marked the end of an era for many who have come to associate her with the vibrant atmosphere of Citizens Bank Park.
But here's where it gets exciting (and a little sad for Phillies fans): Sam is embarking on a grand adventure! The 30-year-old native of Delaware County, who has captivated fans with her incredible talent for balancing popcorn tubs on her head and her engaging social media presence, is setting sail for a new career on a Carnival Cruise Line ship. While her departure date coincided with other major team news, Sam revealed that she had been preparing for this emotional announcement for months, even rehearsing her words in her car to manage her feelings.
While Sam is keeping the specifics of her new role and ship under wraps to protect her privacy, she hinted that it involves warm weather and will leverage her natural knack for interacting with people. "Meeting new people and traveling are two of my favorite things," she shared, expressing her eagerness to hear people's stories, discover new cultures, and sample different cuisines and activities. Her decade of selling popcorn and building a substantial social media following has made her a recognizable figure in Philadelphia's sports scene. She even made a memorable cameo on the children's show Blippi, a fact that she believes will make her particularly recognizable to younger cruise-goers.
Sam admits she'll miss almost everything about her ballpark job, with the exception of the frigid April games, gusty days, and some of the less-than-ideal Saturday afternoon slots. She'll miss the lively fan interactions, the pre-game excitement on Phanavision, the extra income, and even the camaraderie with fans of opposing teams – though she did playfully exclude Mets fans from that sentiment!

"I have been waiting my entire life as a fan to see an All-Star game and a Home Run Derby in person," she lamented. "Then two years ago they announced it for Philly and now I don’t get to be there. I was so looking forward to it, and now I’m very sad to miss that."
However, there's a glimmer of hope for Sam and her fans! The cruise ship she'll be on is equipped with a sports bar, where she plans to catch games when she's not working or soaking up the sun. She'll also be staying connected to all the game-day action through detailed updates from her dad, Joe, and her friend Amelia, ensuring she gets the full fan experience, complete with discussions about player performance and team dynamics.
Sam is quick to emphasize that this is not a permanent farewell, but rather a "see you later." Her contract on the cruise ship concludes in August, paving the way for her return to the ballpark on August 19th for the final game of a home series against the Florida Marlins. "You bet your asses, come hell or high water, I’ll be at that stadium," she declared in her announcement video, promising to be present throughout September and, hopefully, October.
She's even given her blessing to other vendors to sell popcorn during her absence, but she's made it clear that when she returns, the popcorn stand is hers again. "You’re not getting rid of me that easily," she asserted. "No matter where I am in the world, I will still be a Phillies fan, and I will always try and come back."
